(InvestigateTV) — Millions watch Handyman Hal on YouTube, who is known for teaching kids how to fix things and encouraging them along the way.

Off-screen, he is a fan favorite as well as youth pastor Shawn Goins at Refuge Church in Murrells Inlet.

“I created the character Handyman Hal for our Refuge Kids program to make videos for them to watch on Sunday mornings,” said Goins.

However, it was a car wash video shot during the times of COVID-19 that put them on the map.

“That was the only thing kids could do, really, is go through a car wash and see the lights and the spin brushes, and that’s one of the first videos that went viral,” he said.

Goins said a past job working in construction also shaped the series.

“I learned about heavy machinery, learned about tools, and how things are made and how things are built. So all of that really does tie into what we do on the show.”

Handyman Hal later invited his friend Alex Ossmann, also known as Awesome Alex, to join the fun.

“I grew up helping my dad fix cars. I was the girl handing him the wrench, handing him the light, shining it where it needed to go. So, to be able to do that with Handyman Hal and be the artistic one and make things pretty has really been so amazing to reach out to these kids,” said Ossmann.

The two explore it all, from skydiving to making tasty treats.
