GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KJCT) - Mitch Meil, a prominent member of Grand Junction’s skateboarding community, passed on January 24th at Saint Mary’s Hospital. Mitch was a loving husband, caring father, supportive friend, and an incredibly talented skateboarder. He was a vibrant man who brought a lively spirit everywhere he went.

To honor Mitch’s memory, a gathering of family, friends, and local skaters celebrated his life at West Lake Skate Park. Organizers served food and everyone had the opportunity to share stories and fond memories of Mitch. The skate park saw many ride and socialize and a photographer captured a few group pictures that included many of the event’s participants.

A procession followed the celebration, and many partook in riding their skateboard from West Lake Skate Park to the viewing at Martin Mortuary. The skateboarders used North First Street to take them to North Avenue, and many cars and trucks accompanied them. At their arrival at the mortuary, the skaters came together, and lined their skateboards in a line as a symbolic gesture on the last ride for the special occasion. Each skater placed a sticker on Mitch’s casket as a final tribute at the viewing.

Mitch Meil is survived by his wife Lisa, two children, and another child on the way. To support Mitch’s family during this challenging time a fundraiser has been set up to help with medical bills, funeral services, meals, and other necessities.
