Pres. Trump promises checks for seniors
The $90 promise comes after previous promises of even bigger checks
WASHINGTON (Gray DC) - President Donald Trump is promising government payments to senior citizens, with just a month to go until the midterm elections.
It’s a move aimed at helping those on Medicare, so the president is promising $90 checks to more than 20 million seniors.
The White House said the $90 payments for seniors will come from the Medicare Improvement Fund. Medicare Part B enrollees can expect to receive a one-time payment sometime this month - either by direct deposit - or by a check in the mail.
To be eligible, seniors must be living in the U.S. and not be already receiving premium assistance from Medicaid.
In addition, seniors enrolled in Medicare Advantage are also not eligible for the payment.
Senator Ron Wyden (D-Oregon) accused the president of trying to bribe the electorate. He issued a statement:
“This year, Trump handed seniors a $200 monthly Medicare premium for the first time ever, and he also shoveled $20 billion in extra payments to insurance companies selling private Medicare plans, This is another desperate attempt by a failed president to escape Americans’ revulsion with his failed agenda, amounting to one tank of Trump-inflated gas.”
President Trump has also promised to send every American adult $5,000 if Republicans retain control of the House and Senate in the midterm elections. That payment - which would cost more than $1 trillion - would need approval from Congress, although the president has indicated he thinks he might be able to issue those checks without lawmakers approval.
