GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KJCT) - A local Lego robotics team called the Chicken Hawks is going to nationals for the second year in a row. They received an invitation to the Worcester Polytechnic Institute Open Invitational after taking 8th place at the state championship.

The team includes students from Mesa View Elementary, Bookcliff Middle School, and Orchard Mesa Middle School. Competitions have students code Lego robots and solve problems.

Liz Fitzgerald, the team’s Head Coach, said the program provides students with a valuable opportunity. “When they come together in a fun way like the Lego League and do this as a team, they have that safety net with their peers, but they learn how much that they can add to the world and come up with ideas on their own in order to help others,” said Fitzgerald. She also said it helps open up opportunities in science, technology, engineering and mathematics fields for the students.

Right now, the team is raising funds so they can go to the competition in June. If you want to donate or learn a little more about the team, click here.
