SWEET HOME, Ore. (KPTV/Gray News) — A 15-year-old Oregon high school student who suffered a severe brain injury during a football game is preparing to donate his organs, his family said.

Mason Flores was injured during a home game at Sweet Home High School on Monday. He had a seizure and a brain bleed, and he was flown to Portland for surgery.

His family said doctors worked to treat him, but his condition did not improve. Now, his family is saying their goodbyes.

Monday would have been Mason’s 16th birthday.

In an update shared by the family, Mason’s loved ones said he was preparing to donate his organs to help other families. They asked the community to remember him for his love of football, humor and the joy he brought to those around him.

“With the full blessing of Mason’s family, our school district will proceed with our scheduled homecoming ceremonies and events,” Superintendent Terry Martin said in a message to the community. “Continuing with homecoming is a direct reflection of the family’s request to celebrate life, joy and community.”

Martin said counselors and support staff will be available to students and employees.

A GoFundMe page has been set up to help Mason’s family with medical expenses.
