Two Central cross country runners become rivals in college

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KKCO/KJCT) Moving on to the next level from high school athletics to college is a big step and it makes signing day that much more special knowing that all the hard work has paid off. For two central cross country athletes, that dream became a reality today when they signed to run in college.

David Cardenas and Tyman Smart both held their signing day today. Cardenas will run cross country at Adams State. The Grizzlies won the RMAC Championship and finished third at the Division II National Championships.

Tyman Smart will be joining Western State Colorado, the team that finished just behind Adams State in the RMAC Championships in second and fourth at the National Championships last year.

What was once just a thought is now a reality, these two friends will now compete against each other as rivals.

"We've been best friends since freshman year so running against him will be pretty nice," said Tyman Smart. "Being (at) rival schools, it will be pretty cool to see what that will be like."
