HS Wrestling: Grand Junction looks to repeat at state

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KKCO/KJCT) The reigning state champion Grand Junction Tigers will return to Denver on Thursday with eight wrestlers looking to bring back another state title to the Western Slope. With the season they have had they will have a good chance to do so.

Senior 220 class wrestler Hunter Tobiasson will go into the Pepsi Center 38-0 this year. Last year, he finished runner up for a state title.

Another wrestler to keep an eye on is junior Dawson Collins. The 120 wrestler is 36-1 this season. Last year he won the state title at the 113 class and he's ready to add another title.

Sophomore Kieran Thompson has also moved up a weight class but this rising star hasn't slowed down. He has a 28-2 record and all three of these wrestlers know what it's like to compete on the big stage.

"Lot's of kids you'll see uncharacteristic mistakes their first time out there," said head coach Cole Allison. "It's in the Pepsi Center and there is a huge crowd and ooh's and ahh's. Nine mats going on around you, it's pretty easy to lose focus. After you've had a little bit of experience there, you can zero in on the task at hand."
