PUEBLO, Colo. (KJCT) Delta fell just short in the 2A state title game to the Sterling Tigers Saturday afternoon, 27-19. Turnovers were a big problem for the Panthers in their loss. The Sterling Tigers defense intercepted Nolan Bynum three times and they had two fumble recoveries in the win.
Delta had a 3-0 lead after a Koo La Mu 37 yard field goal in the first quarter. Bynum then threw a touchdown pass to Nathan Workman to extend their lead to 10-0 in the second quarter. The Tigers scored two touchdowns in the second quarter, one on a pick six to make it 14-10 at halftime. There was no scoring in the third and Sterling capitalized on the turnovers in the fourth to pull away and win their first ever state championship.
The Panthers finish the season 2A football runner-up with a record of 11-2.
