GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KKCO/KJCT) Fruita Monument baseball needed one win to clinch the Southwestern League title for the fifth time in a row. To do so, they would have to get past rival Grand Junction.
The Wildcats were coming off a 10-0 loss to Ponderosa on April 29. Fruita led 2-1 after the first but Grand Junction took the lead in the third only to have the Wildcats tie it up at three.
Bottom of the fourth, with runners on the corners, Dylan Weaver punches it through the gap in left to score a run and give Fruita the 4-3 lead.
Senior Carson Crone pitched the whole game and only got better as the game went on. He had six strikeouts in the game.
Fruita won their fifth straight conference title with a 4-3 win over Grand Junction.
(carson crone) "It feels amazing," said senior Carson Crone before getting a water bottle shower from his teammates. "It feels amazing with the five in a row. We all have been working hard this whole season for it. It's finally a dream come true. We've had our ups and downs and it's just been a ride and it's one I won't forget in my life."
(ray mclennan) "It's incredible to be in this position," head coach Ray McLennan said. "I told the guys earlier in the week what we've done this year is amazing. This of all the championships we've won, I didn't expect to be in this position. It just goes to show, you get better every day. You come to work and you improve on things and compete and do the right things, you're going to give yourself a chance to win baseball games."
