CMU Football: Mavs mix experience with youth

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KKCO/KJCT) CMU lost 24 players to graduation following last season.

However, the Mavs do return key players such as quarterback Eystin Salum, who was named Preseason RMAC Offensive Player of the Year.

Linebacker Tom Saager and defensive back Antonio Clark are key returners on the defensive side as well.

The Mavs know the early part of camp will be about developing the younger players.

"In the spring those young guys kind of had to step up because there was no one else to step up," said Salum. "Now we're kind of just meshing and getting to spend a lot of time together in camp right now, all day, everyday."

The Mavs were predicted to finish second in the RMAC behind CSU-Pueblo.

"We know we're going to have guys make some mistakes," said head coach Russ Martin. "We'll learn from it. We got to be able to play fast. We got to be able to execute. We're looking for guys who can learn and guys who can give us good energy on the field."

CMU opens the season at 1 P.M. on September 1 at home against South Dakota Mines.
