Athlete of the Week: Shaya Chenoweth

In the first two years of Shaya Chenoweth's high school basketball career she averaged 14 points a game. Now as a junior she is taking her game to new heights.

On Friday night in a league game against the Aspen Skiers Chenoweth scored 18 points in the third quarter on her way to accomplishing 1,000 career points at Grand Valley high school. The accolades are nice for the junior, but in the end scoring doesn't matter to her.

"I don't really care about points honestly. I leave everything out on the floor and I just love playing for our team. Its all about having the love for the game," said Chenoweth.

So far in Shaya's junior season she is averaging just over 24 points a game and has led Grand Valley to a 9-6 record.

"We knew when she was a little kid she was going to be special," said head coach Jake Higuera.

Chenoweth is very good on the basketball court, but she is even better on the soccer pitch. As a sophomore she was named All-State honorable mention for the 2017 soccer season. She will probably be All-State this year in basketball, but she knows that the pitch is where her future will be.

"I've been playing soccer since I was around four years old. I just have love for the game, I love basketball too, but I am just not all enough to play basketball in college," said Chenoweth.

Shaya and the Lady Cardinals will be back into action on Friday night when they host the Basalt Longhorns at 5:30 P.M. at Grand Valley High School.
