Athlete of the Week: Nick Ciccio

Grand Junction, Colo. (KKCO/KJCT) Nick was a three-time All-Conference selection in high school, earning MVP titles and was All-State First-Team Offense. These honors earned Nick a spot at CMU playing in all 11 games as a Freshman.

Nick made the transition from offense to defense at CMU, where he found more success. He put up 23 tackles, five of them in one game, earning Honorable Mention All-Conference honors. But it was another set of stats that took him off the field. In his sophomore year, his grades had slipped and didn't meet eligibility. This took him away from the one thing he loved.

"It helped me realize my love for the game. Just got to do everything right so I can be out there with my teammates. Not mess up like that again."

Nick has already shined in the first week of the season. He earned RMAC Defensive Player of the Week after his game against South Dakota Mines. Nick racked up six tackles, four pass breakups, two interceptions, a forced fumble, and a fumble recovery. For the first week, his six pass breakups were the nations best.

Coach Russ Martin believes in every player on his team. With the support of his teammates, Nick continued to shine with a game-high 15 tackles against Eastern New Mexico. He may have had to learn the hard way, but Nick is happy to be wearing number 19 again.

"I just had a lot of build-up excitement. I waited a whole year. I knew I had to do all of my assignments. I was just really happy to be back there with all my teammates." Says Nick.
