Athlete of the Week: Myah Arrieta

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KKCO/KJCT) At one of the biggest wrestling tournaments in the region, sophomore Myah Arrieta got a win in her first varsity match.

"It was an amazing experience," said Arrieta. "Definitely a lot harder than JV's but I got out there and got the job done and did what I needed to do. I was pretty nervous but at the same time I had a lot of excitement going on. I was just ready to get it done and over with."

"I'm proud of her, she's a hard worker," said Central wrestling head coach Laurence Gurule. "She does a good job, she listens and just wrestles hard. The work that she puts into it shows on the mat."

She won by an 8-1 decision and the later the match went on, the bigger advantage Arrieta had.

"She was aggressive on her feet and got two takedowns," said Gurule. "The other kid was gassed a little bit. Again, that is because she works hard, she didn't get tired."

"My conditioning. Keeping my conditioning up, I was more conditioned than him," said Arrieta. "I wasn't as tired in the third period. When people get tired, they do sloppy wrestling so I take it to my advantage and got some points."

The sophomore has been wrestling with boys team since last year and they don't take it easy on her.

"They actually have a lot of respect for me and I'm glad I can have a team like this. They push me to my hardest."

Central finished one point shy of second place in their home meet and Arrieta wants to continue the Warrior way.

"I just want to keep on winning and get more wins than losses and hopefully be in the championships soon," said Arrieta.
