Football is known as a man’s sport, but Hotchkiss junior kicker Kayia Firor is switching things up on the Western Slope.
She is this week’s athlete of the week.
Kayia Firor is a first year junior kicker for the Hotchkiss bulldogs. Soccer has been a sport she has always loved, but this fall she switched out her soccer cleats for a football helmet and shoulder pads.
"Kayia is just a well-rounded young lady; she is a three sport athlete. I had the opportunity to be around her during track and that is kind of where the kicking thing got started rolling, “said head coach Curtis Hintz.
Her love for the sport of football goes all the way back to the days out on the playground.
"I have always wanted to play football since probably middle school. I use to just play around at recess and I really liked it,” said Firor.
So far the junior is 16-19 on extra points this season and her hard work doesn’t go unnoticed.
“We still treat her the same. She is still a part of the team. She still does the same stuff as us and she’s out here working just as hard as we are,” said senior Colton Peebles.
And what I asked her what her goal was for the season and it was a pretty simple answer.
“I’m just going to try and make as many as I can," said Firor.
Kayia and the Bulldogs are getting hot at the right time. They sit at 5-3 on the season and are hoping for a playoff berth in a few weeks.
