Athlete of the Week: Hunter Stovall

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KKCO/KJCT)-- It has been quite the baseball career already for Mississippi State product Hunter Stovall, a Colorado World Series appearance, a Maxpreps high school All-American and the 2014-2015 Alabama Gatorade Baseball Player of the Year.

Now he is a member of the Colorado Rockies organization in Grand Junction. He is this week's athlete of the week.

It took Hunter Stovall just one at-bat to prove he belongs. In the 21st round pick, he hit a home run on the 2nd pitch he saw.

He hasn't always been known as a long ball threat.

"You can expect it from yourself, but I mean I only hit four home runs in my college career. So for it to happen like that it was crazy,"said Stovall.

Hunter has had plenty of success on the baseball diamond, but it hasn't come without the hard times. Stovall was born six weeks early, and just about didn't make it out of the hospital.

"After I was born my dad said he walked around the corner and I was foaming at the mouth. They were trying to resuscitate me and luckily I look at it as god left me here for a reason," said Stovall.

One day Hunter hopes to be standing on the dirt at Coors Field for the Colorado Rockies, but until that time comes he will just continue playing the game like he always has.

"You just got to realize it is still the sport of baseball. It is not going to change on you overnight. You play it like you've played it your whole life. Just go out there and play," said Stovall.
