Athlete of the Week: Dylan Martinez

Coming so close to being a state champion and falling short is something that will stick with you, but Grand Junction senior Dylan Martinez is using it to be the best he can be.

He is this week’s athlete of the week.

February 18th, 2016, is a day that Grand Junction senior Dylan Martinez will never forget. He fell in the 5A state championship match at 132 pounds by a slim 3-2 decision.

“You know for my whole life being a state champion has been my dream and my goal. So falling short of that you know just kind of lingers and stays with you every day and you use it as motivation,” said Martinez.

With a month of the regular season in the books Martinez’s record sits at 13-2 and this year he won’t be denied at another shot at a state championship.

"I think Dylan has always been motivated. He’s just a little bit more motivated than before coming into his senior year just getting ready to win himself a state title,” said Assistant coach Joe Meinhart.

Back in November Martinez committed to continue his wrestling career and the service of his country in the fall of 2018 at the United States Air Force academy. With all the focus being on this young man this season it’s still the team that comes first.

“A team title is definitely the goal for all of us. You know we’ve been working hard since we were little kids for this year, for this moment. We just fell short of it last year too so we are looking to make that happen this year," said Martinez.

If Martinez is standing alone at the top of the podium this February it will be something that his whole family will forever cherish.

“When you put that much work in and that much effort in it’s a huge reward. So I am sure I won’t be able to hold composure as well as he will,” said Dylan father Paul Martinez.
