Athlete of the Week: Casey Hudson

FRUITA, Colo. (KKCO/KJCT) Last week at the Jackpot Duals, Fruita senior heavyweight wrestler Casey Hudson won his match to take first place. Even though it didn't go perfect, he was able to fight through to the pin.

"Just staying fighting through the entire match. Had a little bit of an issue in that last match. I just persevered coming back, keeping my head clear going back, being fundamental," said Hudson.

"The big thing is he's very aggressive," said Fruita Monument head coach Lucas Archuleta. "Any time you can do something and go aggressively, go one hundred percent at all times, if you make a mistake you have a chance to recover. I think that's the biggest thing. When he does get himself in trouble, he's going one hundred percent, he's going full speed and he has a chance to get out of that trouble."

Hudson also won in his weight class at the Warrior Classic. His motor is always churning and it never turns off in a match, wearing down his opponents.

"Casey is one that just drives you crazy. He's a little fire plug. I mean, I guess not little but he's a fire plug," said Archuleta. "He goes hard and you never know what is going to come out of it. He just keeps going, going, and going. He grinds and just gives his best effort."

"It's an honor to be a part of this team and be able to compete with these guys," said Hudson. "I appreciate everything that our coaching staff and what our own athletes do for each other."

With a few big wins under his belt, Hudson has set himself up for a strong start to the new year with high aspirations and no limits to where he could finish the season.

"He's just getting better and better each week.," said Archuleta. "He has that goal of being a state champion and if he keeps working at it, he has that chance to get it."

"Just to get better every week of course. Hopefully with that goal set, smaller goals building up to bigger goals can lead into state," said Hudson. "Qualifying of course first, but I have got to do good in the season before we get there."
