Uber driver supports company after local theft

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KKCO/KJCT)-- After an Uber driver allegedly stole from a customer earlier this week, a local Uber driver is speaking out, saying most drivers are respectful and treat customers well.

His name is Van James, and he says he's been driving for Uber for about four years. He says the company does state background checks on all of their drivers.

With that said as long as you don't have felony convictions, violent crimes, or sexual offenses within the last seven years, you can drive for Uber. James says he hopes people will reach out to Uber over St. Patrick's Day weekend.

"I feel it's my duty on the weekends when I drive at night, to make sure that people get safely home. I would rather put up with obnoxious people for a few minutes, than be killed by them because they were drinking and driving," James said.

Uber also requires their drivers not have any DUI's or reckless driving offenses within the last seven years.
