GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KKCO/KJCT)-- It might feel like summer break came and went, but it only takes a few months to forget important safety measures that help keep everyone on school grounds safe.

Central High School
Michael Dixon, who is the School Resource Officer at Central High School, has some tips that could help keep everyone safe while making your way to class.
“First thing is that everyone has to adjust to a new schedule,” says Dixon. “So, giving yourself a little more time when you leave the house, giving yourself an extra ten minutes is going to save you in the long run. Remember that everyone has those first day jitters, so throughout this whole week, you will have a little more nervous drivers, especially in the high school, so make sure you're being a defensive driver.”
Dixon also says for parents who have kids in elementary school that walk home, make sure you pick a designated route that you both know. That way if anything happens or plans change, you always know which path your kid takes to find them.
