GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KKCO/KJCT)-- Special Olympics Colorado is wrapping up their Summer Games this weekend in Grand Junction.
This is the 50th year of Special Olympics Colorado, and the 7th year the Summer Games have been here in town.
Organizers say the Summer Games are their largest event of the year. It’s an important event, because it helps athletes show off their skills after practicing year-round.
“I know most of these athletes, like I said, because I’ve been here so many times, so they be looking at me to cheer them on, they want to see me root for them and everything, and I’m proud to do that for them,” Kelvin Williams, volunteer, said.
Kelvin is part of a group of volunteers from Collbran Job Corps.
More than 1,000 athletes competed in track and field, soccer, swimming, and powerlifting at Suplizio Field and Colorado Mesa University.
