GRAND JUNCTION,Colo. (KKCO/KJCT)-- On Friday a local hospital hosted a program called “Singing My Way Through.” The people at St. Mary’s were joined by an award-winning singer and songwriter who talked about the importance of mental health.

The event was free and was put on by both St. Mary's and the Education Center.

Meg Hutchinson, who's a national singer, struggled with depression when she was a teenager.

She says that at the time she was scared to ask for help. Now, she wants to help others who may be going through the same experiences she has, by talking about the challenges she has faced.

"As a teenager, before I even understood that I had a mental illness, creativity was a big part of how I cope. I feel like, songwriting was the first medicine I had. It was the first way to express what was going on and try to make sense of what I was feeling and going through,” says Mental Health Advocate Meg Hutchinson.

At the event, Meg talked to people about the importance of family and having social support.
