Shopping safely online this holiday season

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KJCT)-- Online shoppers beware, don't get scammed this Cyber Monday.

The holidays are prime time for scammers to swipe some money and private information from online shoppers. To enjoy the online sales but avoid scams, experts say to shop from reputable retailers like Amazon, Walmart and Target. Also, it's best not to click on shopping links from emails that don't look legitimate. Scammers may try to send emails from email addresses that are similar to actual retail stores.

"If you see a really good deal through Facebook, social media or email, don't click on it. Instead, Google the website, yourself, and go to the actual company's website," said Megan Terlecky, Mesa County Sheriff's Office.

When scrolling through websites, look for a green lock at the top of the address bar. That symbol means that the site is encrypted and will protect your personal information.

"I would go and look for reviews for these websites before putting in your credit card number or any sensitive information," said Keren Angeles, Cyber Security Research Assistant.

It's also recommended to use a credit card when online shopping rather than your debit card.
