Sharing his work: Meet local poet John Thurman

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KKCO/KJCT) -- A local man is proving you’re never too old to learn something new.

John Thurman has been a soldier and a firefighter, now he's an unlikely citizen historian. Thurman says he's always had a passion for writing but it wasn't until he attended college, at age 42, that he began his relationship with poetry.

He was completing an English prerequisite for his Industrial Technology degree.

"We’re still learning every day." He said.

After visiting the Crazy Horse Memorial, he was inspired to write poetry about Native American history and culture. A pet project he's been working on for five years. Now he’s blended in his poetry background to produce a work of creative non- fiction.

“I don’t think I chose poetry, I think poetry chose me," Thurman said.

His book called 'Contemplations' has already been published. It is out in paperback from Eber & Wein Publishing.
