Salvation Army helping families with Angel Tree program

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KKCO/KJCT)-- The Salvation Army is lending a helping hand to local families in need this holiday season.

It can be a stressful time of year for many families in Mesa County, because they can’t afford gifts for their kids. Each year, the Salvation Army puts on different programs to help these families in need.

The Angel Tree is one of the organization’s programs that gifts kids toys for Christmas.

"Their parent has a conversation with our caseworker and they're asked to ask their children 'what do you want for Christmas?' and then they give us their list," said Captain Steve Staneart, Commanding Officer of Salvation Army of Mesa County.

Those wanting to donate, can then pick an angel off the tree and shop for the gifts on the child’s list.

The Salvation Army works to make Christmas special for the entire family by donating Christmas dinner.

"We serve around, this year, it looks like around 2,000 kids. Around 700 families get a Christmas dinner with a turkey and all the stuffing and fixings,” said Captain Staneart.
