Rock fall mitigation in DeBeque Canyon

GRAND JUNCTION, Co. (KKCO/KJCT)-- You could run in to heavy traffic on I-70. CDOT is doing rock fall mitigation Monday just east of Palisade.

Crews are doing the work in DeBeque Canyon throughout the day.

There will be 20 to 30 minute closures.

Eastbound traffic will be stopped at the Kokopelli off ramp near mile marker 45.

Westbound traffic will be stopped at the Cameo Truck stop, near marker 46.

We're told workers are putting up a fence to keep the rocks from falling on the interstate.

"Some rocks have started coming down before the creation of the rock fall fence. So they are going up there, and they are removing some of the rocks with the possibility of blasting, which is why there are 20 and 30 minute delays going east and westbound," said CDOT Communications Manager, Breanna Rogers.

CDOT says the work should be done by September 10th at the latest.
