Red Mountain Pass remains closed after avalanche mitigation

OURAY, Colo. (KKCO/KJCT)-- Red Mountain Pass remains closed after avalanche mitigation this weekend.

60 feet of snow rolled down the mountains and onto the highway, leaving about 300 feet of the road blanketed with snow.

The pass has been shut down for eight days and The Colorado Department of Transportation says there's no end in sight.

“With this snow that we’re getting today, and probably for the next three days, we’re concerned about the amount of snow that may be dropped on the avalanche paths. We are forecasting that they may need to be mitigated again,” said Lisa Schwantes, Southwest Regional Communications Manager for CDOT.

Anyone trying to get to, and from, Silverton and Ouray should take Route 145 via Telluride during the highway's closure.
