Over 1,000 applications sent to CMU on free application day

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KKCO/KJCT)-- Colorado students submitted more than 22,000 college applications in just one day.

October 30 last year was Colorado’s first-ever free application day when public colleges and universities waive their fees.

Colorado Mesa University had about 1,193 applicants. The school say they are growing fast with bigger freshman classes starting every year.

"You know it's also reflective of the overall growth of the overall institution, of our profile increase. We've got the breadth and quality of academic programs and students have the ability to sit in a classroom with 40 students instead of 400,” said John Marshall, Vice President of Student Services, CMU.

Across the state, about half of the applications were submitted by students of color, and a third were submitted by first-generation students. Two groups who have historically been low in Colorado.
