New rules for open burn season

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KKCO/KJCT)-- Open burn season starts up next month, but the rules are a little different this year.

Properties now must be at least one acre if you want to open burn.

Mesa County Public Health says the decision was made to lower fire risk between properties that are close to each other.

What hasn't changed is that for agricultural burning, and general burning you still need to get a permit, which you can apply for starting March 1.

“We actually aligned our open burn regulations with the City of Grand Junction’s just to get rid of some confusion. There were a lot of questions about those regulations versus the county regulations, and so now it’s the same across the board for everyone,” said Spokesperson for Mesa County Public Health, Katie Nelson.
