GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KKCO/KJCT)-- A deadly crash by the Colorado River in Palisade left one dead, and a child in the hospital.
"We responded and arrived to find that one person had been deceased. The vehicle was traveling eastbound which would be this direction going away from Palisade towards the interstate," said CSP Trooper Lucas Johnson.
At high speed, the driver didn't have a chance.
"The vehicle went off the right side of the road, went across both lanes, and then rolled off the left side of the road towards the riverbank," Johnson said.
But it's what troopers found the vehicle that was shocking.
"A juvenile child that was transported to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries," Johnson said.
Troopers say the young girl was ejected from the car, by remarkably, she was still able to walk away.
"The child was standing on the side of the road when emergency personnel arrived," Johnson said.
While the girl was very lucky, CSP says its a timely reminder.
"Pay attention to your surroundings and your speed, and the biggest thing is just to buckle up. There's a reason why those laws are in place, and there's a reason why it increases your chances of survival," Johnson said.
