GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KJCT News)-- On Friday students at East Middle School showed off their masterpieces for National History Day presentations.

Every year students work on a project that challenges them to research, analyze and draw meaningful conclusions. This year's theme is 'breaking barriers'.
They've been working hard since November to complete their final projects.
Students can submit their projects through documentaries, papers, exhibits, performances or websites.

East Middle School student Azure Carrasco did her project on the underground railroad. She says she was inspired by the recently released film "Harriet".

"I was fascinated by how the underground railroad worked and the people behind it, such as William Still, " says Carrasco.

Students can go on to compete in one of fifteen regions across the state. Regional winners compete at the State Contests in May at the University of Colorado Denver campus.
