GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KKCO/KJCT)-- You might think of the Grand Junction Motor Speedway as a go-cart track, but this weekend it was part of a national championship race.
The American Motorcyclist Association Supermoto National Championship was in town this weekend. Grand Junction hosted the second round in the series, and this is the first time a big championship race like this has been at the speedway.
Supermoto is a mix of street bike racing and motocross. The bikes are dirt bikes, so they can handle jumps, but have slick tires for the track. Different weather and conditions from place to place are part of the challenge.
"So the tires are behaving a little bit different, and we had to make as many changes as we can. And this track, in particular, has a lot of undulation and hills, so it's a super cool circuit. It's great you guys have it in your backyard. We're jealous if we're being honest with it," said Parker Pitman, Husqvarna Professional Supermoto Racer.
Racers travel from all over to each round in the series. The next race in the championship is in Texas, coming up in June.
