GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KJCT)-- Montrose has been seeing more crime in recent years, that’s why the city is trying to stay on top of building a new police department.
After voters approved a 0.58 percent increase in sales tax in Montrose, the city is moving forward with a new police department.
Officials say Montrose has been seeing more crime, forcing them to hire more police officers. They say in 2018 there was over 700 crimes reported.
Currently, the department is in an old library and is not designed for the work they do.
Now, they're in the stages of finding an architect for the new building.
"A building that really wasn't designed to be a police station, forces you to work a certain way. We'll design this building so that things are more efficient for the officers." Less Time in the building, more time in the streets,” says Montrose Police Chief Blaine Hall.
The city will begin construction on the new building in the spring.
