MONTROSE, Colo. (KKCO/KJCT) -- The man who was shot after a standoff with the Montrose Police Department at Holiday Inn Express Wednesday morning has been identified as Gilbert Garcia, that according to the 7th Judicial District.
He's now in custody following an hours-long standoff at a Montrose hotel. According to a news release from the City of Montrose, there is no threat to public safety.
We're told Garcia was shot and there's no official word on his condition at this time, but we're told he was expected to be released from the hospital by Wednesday afternoon, that according to Tom Chinn, the Montrose police chief.
The Montrose Police Department says it started around 5 a.m. Wednesday. Garcia entered the Holiday Inn Express located at 1391 South Townsend Ave.
Garcia demanded a room but there were none available. When he was told the rooms were all full, the suspect showed a gun and threatened the staff.
He then barricaded himself in a room near the lobby and the staff called the police.
The Montrose Police Department Special Weapons and Tactics Team, SWAT, arrived on the scene. According to the police department, an "exchange of gunfire did occur." No other details were provided.
The hotel was evacuated during the ordeal.
Garcia was taken into custody at around 8 a.m.
Montrose police officers have contained the scene and are investigating.
