GRAND JUNCTION, Colo (KJCT)- The identity and the cause of death of the man that was found on June 16 in a canal off of 38 Road in Palisade was released by the Mesa County Coroner.
On Thursday, the body was identified by the Coroner's Office as 50-year-old Palisade resident Darrin Burningham.
The Coroner says that the cause of death is drowning and the manner of death is accident.
The body was originally found by an employee with the Orchard Mesa Irrigation District.
"Called the sheriff's office, they came out, they believe he actually went into my canal on the other side of the river, and if that's where he went in he went through five different siphons and tunnels,” says Max Schmidt, District Manager of the Orchard Mesa Irrigation District.
Schmidt says it's not just humans that can fall victim to the rushing cold and deep water, but pets too.
He hopes hikers will bring water for their dogs so they aren't tempted to drink from the canals.
