A man is in jail on charges of kidnapping and sexual assault on a child, among other charges, after allegedly luring a juvenile male to a car with a social media app.

That’s all according to a press release from the Grand Junction Police Department. Aaron Scott Smith, 47, of Utah, was arrested on charges of internet luring of a child, first-degree kidnapping, enticement of a child, sexual assault on a child, unlawful sexual contact without consent and obstructing a police officer.

Police said Thursday, at about 7:30 p.m. officers went to a panic alarm from a cell phone near Hayes Drive and Miranda Street in Grand Junction. They found a parked car with dark tinted windows and used a spotlight to check for people inside. They saw a man climb out of the back seat of the car, into the front seat, according to the press release.

Police told the man to get out of the car, and he was detained. Officers then found juvenile male in the back seat of the car, who said he met a person he thought to be a 13 or 14-year-old male on Kik, the social messaging app. They messaged for a few days and eventually arranged a meeting. The victim walked to the place, and when he got there an adult male, identified as Smith, called the victim by name and told him to get in the car, according to the press release.

The victim then told police he immediately activated an emergency alarm on his phone. Police say officers found the car approximately 13 minutes after the alarm call.

Smith has a criminal history of felony convictions for sexual crimes against children, according to the press release.
