The Grand Junction police department was on scene of a business near 16th Street and North Avenue, investigating an explosion.

36-year-old Emmett Wells told officers that when he set his backpack down, an improvised firearm in the backpack went off unexpectedly. Wells was injured when the gun went off and was taken to the hospital.

After being treated, GJPD took wells to the Mesa County Jail on charges that include illegal discharge of a firearm.

When officers arrived on scene at the North Avenue business, they found a backpack outside of a door to the building. The backpack was moved outside the building by an employee at the complex after they said smoke was coming from one of the pockets following the explosion. It all happened at about 3 p.m. on Sunday.
