GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KKCO/KJCT)-- UPDATE: A man accused of killing his 2-month-old son was in court for the first time on Wednesday.
Shaun Obyrne, 31, of Grand Junction, had a bond set at $500,000, cash only. He is not allowed to contact anyone under the age of 18, including a biological child he has.
He is due back in court on September 18.
A Mesa County man has been arrested after being accused in the death of his 2-month-old son.
Shaun Obyrne, 31, of Grand Junction, is being held in the Mesa County Jail and is facing several charges including child abuse resulting in death, deputies said.
About two weeks ago, the Mesa County Sheriff's Office responded to a home in the 100 block of 29 3/4 Road, for a report of a baby who was not breathing. He was taken to the hospital, where he died two days later.
Doctors said the baby's injuries were not accidental, according to the sheriff's office. They found older injuries that had partially healed. At the time of death, the infant had at least 17 broken ribs that were in various stages of healing.
The coroner's office is calling the infant's death a homicide.
The sheriff's office says that, as a result, the coroner will be taking another look at the death of a 2-year-old who was in Obyrne's care. That child's death was ruled as natural on May 6, 2018.
