Local volunteers prepare holiday care packages for deployed military

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KJCT)-- A local group of Volunteers are preparing to send care packages to deployed military around the world for the holidays.

Operation Independence actually sends the care packages every month, but they say during the holidays it's more important.

Inside the box is a note from someone local and snacks like granola bars, beef jerky and hot chocolate packages.

The group is 100 percent volunteer, so they are always looking for people to donate food and write letters.

"There's so many of them that don't have anybody from home. People that do have things from home, family here, they get packages that's fine. But there's so many of them over them that don't have any family at all, and it's important to let them know year-round that we're supporting them and thinking of them,” says President Operation Independence Karon Carley.

They will ship their first holiday batch out on Dec. 1.
