MONTROSE, Colo. (KKCO/KJCT News)-- Saturday was a very special day for a Montrose veteran. Retired Lieutenant Nicholas Morris was handed the key to his brand new house.
Homes for our Troops is a non-profit organization that works to donate specially built homes for injured veterans. Nick's new home features special adaptations such as widened doorways for wheelchair access, a roll-in shower and kitchen amenities that include pull-down shelving and lowered counter-tops.
"Before I would just have to limp around and just deal with it,” says Nick Morris. The Director of Construction, Richard Pratt adds, "There's over 40 special adapted features throughout the home that are designed to help the veteran live a normal life."
Nick was severely injured while serving in Afghanistan. He was on a resupply mission when his vehicle struck a pressure plate. Doctors eventually amputated his right leg after months of limb salvage.
Nick looks forward to moving into his new home in two weeks.
