GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KJCT)-- The Colorado Department of Transportation prepping I-70 Thursday afternoon to prepare for busy holiday travel.

C-DOT is closed off parts of I-70 to do winter maintenance. According to their website, the westbound and eastbound lanes of east Vail to Frisco was closed down. Avalanche mitigation also being done near Vail at mile marker 176. C-DOT officials say the President's Day weekend is a big travel day along I-70 and they want to make sure the roads are ready for travelers.

"President's Day is a very popular skiing and snowboarding weekend. A lot of folks take time off to travel, especially if they haven't been to Colorado before. They may be traveling here to check out our incredible mountains. So we're planning for heavy traffic this weekend," said Elise Thatcher, Colorado Department of Transportation.

Chain and traction laws are in place this weekend. Before hitting the road, check road conditions and closures.
