An investigation is underway after a helicopter crashed in Montrose County near Jay Jay Road on Tuesday.

According to the Montrose County Sheriff's Office, the pilot who crashed was 74-year-old Leonard Felix from Olathe. He owns and operates Olathe Air Service.

Initially, the National Transportation Safety Board told us the pilot sustained injuries, but it was not clear the extent of those injuries. Montrose County Sheriff Gene Lillard says Felix was able to walk away from the crash site.

The helicopter sustained substantial damage.

Crews spent Tuesday evening cleaning up the wreckage and loading the pieces of the helicopter onto a flatbed truck.

The NTSB is working with the Federal Aviation Administration and local law enforcement to figure out what exactly led up to the crash.
