At 4:25 p.m. on August 5, 2019, the Grand Junction Fire Department responded to the area of 27 ½ Court and G Road where Xcel Energy workers discovered high amounts of the poisonous hydrogen sulfide gas.

According to GJFD, the gas was not a result of the work being done by Xcel Energy and the source of the gas is unknown.

Access to G Road was closed during the incident and many homeowners were unable to leave their homes.

GJFD and Xcel took several gas readings and found that the hydrogen sulfide had dissipated.

GJFD cleared the area by 9:29 p.m. and the road was reopened.
