Gunfire 'exchanged' in overnight SWAT incident, suspect in custody

Montrose, CO A suspect is in custody following an hours-long standoff at a Montrose hotel. According to a news release from the City of Montrose, there is no threat to public safety.

The Montrose Police Department says it started around 5 a.m. Wednesday morning. A man, who has not yet been identified entered the Holiday Inn Express located at 1391 South Townsend Ave.

The man demanded a room but there were none available. When he was told the rooms were all full, the suspect showed a gun and threatened the staff.

He then barricaded himself in a room near the lobby and the staff called the police.

The Montrose Police Department Special Weapons and Tactics Team, (SWAT) arrived on the scene. According to the police department, an "exchange of gunfire did occur." No other details were provided.

The hotel was evacuated during the ordeal.

The suspect was taken into custody at around 8 a.m.

Montrose police officers have contained the scene and are investigating.
