Caregivers of the Grand Valley are being celebrated this week with a few special events.

Cappella of Grand Junction will host a special painting class Wednesday morning. It's for those suffering from Alzheimer's and their caregivers. Art is said to not only bring happiness to the artists, but also help with memory loss.

Thursday night, caregivers can celebrate Valentine's Day with others who are facing similar struggles. Cappella is hosting a night of music, food and drinks for caregivers at the "Memory Cafe". Caregivers will be able to meet other caregivers and talk with Alzheimer's experts.

"Just come and socialize with other folks, talk with other folks that are going through the same journey and navigating these waters. See what they're doing. I think the biggest form of support is in others and in your community," said Jonie Karp, Sales and Marketing Director for Cappella of Grand Junction.

Alzheimer's is the sixth leading cause of death in Mesa County. The rate of the disease is more than ten percent higher than the Colorado average. Caregivers face increased stress which can lead to isolation and depression.
