GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KKCO/KJCT)-- UPDATE: In a news release Saturday afternoon, Colorado Mesa University said student Brett Ojiyi passed away Friday night.
An email to students from university President Tim Foster said: “It is with a heavy heart that I inform you of the loss of one of our students from a tragic accident.”
In a statement, the university said: "'The entire Colorado Mesa University community is saddened from the news that Brett passed this morning. This tragedy touches all of us in different ways,' said CMU President Tim Foster."
The coroner’s office hasn’t yet completed an autopsy. They’ll determine the cause and manner of death.
CMU said in the release the Grand Junction Police Department is investigating a gunshot fatality incident that happened off-campus in the early hours of Saturday morning.
Ojiyi was a member of the Maverick football team, according to the school. A moment of silence will be held before Saturday’s game at CMU.

Just after midnight, Grand Junction police said they were called to a home in the 1100 block of Main Street for a report of a shooting.
Officers said they found a man suffering from a gunshot wound to the chest. He died at the scene.
No arrests have been made, according to police, but they do not believe there is any danger to the community. Multiple witnesses were interviewed.
No other details about the incident were provided.
The man's identity was not released. That information will come from the Mesa County Coroner's Office.
