GJFD getting new gear to meet demand

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KKCO/KJCT) -- After the 2019 budget was approved with a focus on public safety, the Grand Junction Fire Department is getting more gear.

City Council approved the purchase of a new ambulance and brush truck at Wednesday night's meeting.

Together, that will cost a little more than $500,000, but grants will cover some of those costs. The rest of the money will come from the city's general fund.

The fire department says the vehicles are needed to keep up with their increased call volumes.

During the budget crafting process, Grand Junction residents were torn on whether or not they wanted a good chunk of money going into public safety.

Some said they believed it was absolutely necessary, others said they had concerns about several vehicles being sent to every call, no matter how minor it is.

At the next meeting, City Council is also slotted to approve the purchase of two more pumper trucks.
