FRUITA, Colo. (KKCO/KJCT)-- Four families are without a home after a fire ripped through their apartment complex.
It happened near David Court and Cedar Glen Way in Fruita.
Lower Valley Fire estimates the fire caused tens of thousands of dollars in damages, after it started outside the apartments.
They say the fire got inside the attic of the building, and there were no fire breaks, or barriers, to stop it from spreading to several units.
"Initially, we didn't have clear reports as to if all the occupants were out, so our first priority was life safety. So our crews went interior, to do a search, and make sure all occupants were out of the structure. We pulled everybody and went to what we call a defensive strategy, when the roof started to collapse," said Captain Matt Katzenberger.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
