GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KJCT)-- A Mesa County man has been hospitalized with the flu.

The flu season for Mesa County starting earlier than last year. For the 2018-2019 season, the first hospitalization from the illness was in November.

"Flu season begins in the beginning of October, and so, while it does seem early, it's not entirely unexpected. Just because we're seeing hospitalizations now, doesn't indicate, necessarily, that we're going to have a severe season. We can't know that yet," said Andy Tyler, Regional Epidemiologist for Mesa County Public Health.

Mesa County Public Health's Influenza Report found, that last year, Mesa County had higher hospitalization rates than the rest of Colorado, and the country. Tyler also said that 40 percent of Mesa County adults report getting a flu shot, but the goal is to have 70 percent of adults vaccinated.

Mesa County Public Health is hosting a Flu Clinic on Saturday, October 19 from 9 A.M. to 12:00 P.M.
