Dog food recalls

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KKCO/KJCT)-- A new food recall has been put in place, but this time it's for your dog's food.

The FDA says some brands like Natural Life, Evolve and Nature's Promise have up to 70 times the safe levels of Vitamin D.

"Vitamin D is an essential nutrient for dogs so it's something that they need to have, but in normal amounts," said Dr. Dominic Carrica, Amigo Animal Clinic.

If dogs ingest too much of the vitamin, it can lead to serious health issues.

"Greatly excessive amounts, there's a potential to cause kidney damage," said Dr. Carrica.

For most cases, a visit to the vet can solve the problem.

"Kidney dysfunction is generally treated with fluid therapy to get the kidneys working," said Dr. Carrica.

Some signs that your pup may be suffering from kidney failure is excessive drooling, vomiting and loss of appetite.

"When you do see recalls, I would pay attention to the recalls. Stop feeding your pet that food if it's been recalled," said Dr. Carrica.
