District 51 All Staff Kickoff

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KKCO/KJCT)-- It's less than a week away from the start of a new school year, and that’s why about 3,000 District 51 staff members met up at Stocker Stadium.

D51 staff members filed into the stadium at 7:30 a.m. to kick off the new school year.

New this year are later start times, which means middle and high schools will start around 8 a.m. and elementary schools will start at 8:55 a.m.

Also, the school board has announced a bond election to replace Grand Junction High School, which superintendent Diana Sirko says is part of a much bigger idea.

“Improving all of our high schools, and updating the safety in all of them, hardening our high schools. One way to do that is to replace Grand Junction High School just because its 63 years old," says Sirko. "It has served us well, but its time is done.”

In November, voters will be asked if they approve of a nearly 180-million dollar bond measure for a new GJHS.
